I'm trying to wrap my head around how you could possibly forget to lower your tailgate when dropping the 5'er. I can't get to the electrical plug or the emergency break away cable with the tailgate up. When lowering the landing gear I also watch the plate to see when I have raised the trailer high enough to pull out from underneath. Can't see that with the gate up either. It has nothing to do with remembering to lower it. Someone please explain how you could possibly do that???
Maybe you reach into the bed, pull the hitch lever, and then someone comes over and wants you do something "RIGHT NOW" so when you come back you pull ahead and BOOM.
Lots of scenarios even if you can't see it. Just realize that it does happen to people, that's why I have the notch tailgate: so it doesn't happen to me. :)
