We have a portable in the truck bed. It's chained to the 5er hitch. If I don't want to mess with it, I can just open the tailgate and point the exhaust out the back.
Alternatively, I've seen a rack built on top of the pin box to hold the generator. Really slick and the pin box is plenty strong enough.
