Third Brake light camera

I have a 2019 GMC 2500HD Duramax and was told that I could replace the third brake light with one that has a camera built in for hooking up 5th wheel trailers. Obviously the tailgate camera is useless when hooking up a 5er since the tailgate is dropped and pointing down. Does anyone have or has anyone installed the third brake light camera? Is it a helpful accessory or something that’s not really necessary? I’m totally new to the 5th wheel scene, so I’m reaching out for advice. Thanks!
  • One big advantage of FW ownership, is the hookup/disconnect process. In most cases, it is easy to see the hitch jaw opening, and the pin on pin box. If you don't want to turn your head to look back, or raise up in the seat a little, then a camera would be very helpful.

I did remove the not needed center head rest, front seat, and back, for a better view, but even with them installed, not a big deal.

This is a high tech time for many, and some absolutely will want a camera positioned for viewing hitch. Just for example, it is much easier to take a selfie having a phone with front/rear camera. No one would want a phone with a single front facing camera :)

  • I have the cargo camera option, don't use it! I simply removed the center headrest and can clearly see the opening in my B&W hitch for the kingpin to slip right into looking in the mirror.
  • Next time you are hooking up, look up above the pin box at the shiny front of your trailer. It works like a mirror. You can see the pin box and the hitch in your truck.
  • Harbor Freight sells two marker balls on magnetic rods set one on kingpin the other on the front edge of your hitch
  • I just googled third brake light- Light Source has them for all makes-$179.00. Look them up!
