Time for Tires

I think they have different speed ratings for different tire sizes. My tires are 235/80-16, and they are stamped 75mph. Looking online at Discount Tire, I saw another size, 225/75-15, they were listed as 81. So the speed rating depends on your tire size.

I just put a set of HD's on my trailer yesterday. They are stamped on the 81mph.

Yes, I have the HD, I just bought them this morning. And Discount Tire I looked at, list them as L 75mph, at least in my size, 235/80-16.

You sure you're looking at the HD tire? My RH's are 75, but Discount has the HD listed as an "M" speed rating, which is 81. They're normally spot on.

I've seen people say the HD is speed rated for 81mph. I'm wondering where you have found this information. The only place I've been able to find a speed rating on the HD, is Discount Tire, and they list it as Speed L, which is 75mph. I've looked on Carlstargroup.com, which I think is the manufacturer, and I didn't find any speed rating.

Those that say the rating is 81mph, where did you find this info? Not that the difference matters to me, I pull at 65-70 anyway. But it would be nice to know what margin I have.

Wise thinking. Especially when when using a 80 psi E tire at 65 psi D tire pressures which isn't a good idea on a trailer.

I see the new Sundance has a GVWR around 9900 lbs amd 7xxx lb dry weight. At full GVWR the tires can have 2400-2500 lbs load on them so the E tire will give a big 20 percent reserve capacity......IF the wheels are 80 psi rated. The advantage of the E tire comes at the higher 80 psi pressures.


I would look at the new Carlisle HD which is a far ahead of previous Carlisle ST tires regardless....... especially the older ones.

Maxxis ?? We've had about 30 members report issues with the ST8008 tires plus their still stuck at 65 mph technology. Maxxis says not all sizes has the nylon cap over the tread which may be causing their issues.

I would stay with the D rated tires on that trailer. If your at full GVWR of 10,000 lbs, you would only have have 80 percent of that on the tires, which would atually be about 2,000 lbs per tire. The D rated tires are good for 2,540, so plenty of reserve.

I know Maxxis is the standard answer on the forum, and they are likely better than most off brands. I have the Provider tires that Jim mentioned, and like them. Like the newer Carlisle, they run cooler, and are rated to 81 mph.

I just got back from having Carlisle Radial Trail HD put on ours this morning. The "Triangle" tires had 10k miles on them, in our sixth season. I had one delaminate last trip, the tire guy said another was delaminated pretty bad, and a third had started. Glad to be off them.

I went with the HD over the RH, figuring they are the current model. I thought about going with the RH, and not be a Guinea pig with the HD. I hope they are as good or better than the RH. They look WAAAAY better than the Triangle.

We got Carlisle Radial Trails on our 5er from America's Tire and they have been great so far with fairly regular use for the last two years.

Thanks so much everyone. Will look at both brands of tires and let you know. Right now I have Towmaster on the trailer and want to make a change.
