Time for Tires

Well, my tires are four years old now with very few miles on them. Time for new ones due to age. They are ST225/75R/15 D load range. I know certain brands are better than others so here we go asking what you all have had the best luck with in this size range? Also, would you go to an "E" load range realizing that we have plenty of heat down here and don't want to add more heat with more plys.
Thanks,
Curly

Wise thinking. Especially when when using a 80 psi E tire at 65 psi D tire pressures which isn't a good idea on a trailer.

I see the new Sundance has a GVWR around 9900 lbs amd 7xxx lb dry weight. At full GVWR the tires can have 2400-2500 lbs load on them so the E tire will give a big 20 percent reserve capacity......IF the wheels are 80 psi rated. The advantage of the E tire comes at the higher 80 psi pressures.

I would look at the new Carlisle HD which is a far ahead of previous Carlisle ST tires regardless....... especially the older ones.

Another popular new gen M speed rated ST tire on other forums is a Provider by Taskmaster. http://taskmasterproducts.com/products/provider-st-radial/

Maxxis ?? We've had about 30 members report issues with the ST8008 tires plus their still stuck at 65 mph technology. Maxxis says not all sizes has the nylon cap over the tread which may be causing their issues.

I went to E's on my 11,320 GVW Komfort years ago, and love them. Currently on Carlisle RH's because I couldn't get Maxxis in time for a trip a few years ago, and these were recommended by personal acquaintances at Discount who use them themselves. Just got back from a 300+ mile round trip, and driving this PM in 111 temps through PHX. Tires were all at around 143-145 at a potty stop in Snottsdale, with the sun-sides only about +2. All bearings were about 125-6. TV tires were also in the mid-140's. All 8 tires are E's, and all were at 80 psi. Travel speed was avg. 62 mph.

ON EDIT: the Carlisle HD tires are running about 52% 5-star and 28% 1-star on Amazon. Sounds like Carlisle may be back to the "old days" in quality. I'd certainly have preferred Maxxis, but couldn't get them in time for the trip I was taking. Now, looking at new FW's, it will have 16" rims, so my options are pretty wide open.

  • Take a look at the new Carlisle HD tires. 81mph speed limit. A unique tread pattern with a center rib and two small ribs on the outer edges. I put 4 on my 5th wheel a month or so ago. Too early to tell about reliability.

As long as your wheels can handle 80 psi, I recommend moving to Load range E. Maxxis are what I went to on my last rig and they served me well. I also had them balanced which I believe made a difference. Moving up to E's made the trailer more stable and gave me much more confidence going down the road.
