Tire help

Is there anything wrong with going overboard on load range rating? My trailer came with load range d tires. I had a blowout within 1 year of just being a weekend warrior. Thinking of going to a load range F.

    Are your current tires ST205/75R15?
    225/75/R15

I plan on going to 16” rim.
I was exactly where you are last year. I upgraded to Endurance 225/75/R15 load rate E and love them. Weigh your camper loaded and adjust air pressure to the chart. I air mine to 68lbs.

No need to change rims unless you just want to.

How do I know what my actual weight PSI is?

Most truck stops have a CAT scale. For something like $12, they are happy to let you weigh your rig.

For an extra $2.50, you can drop the trailer and weigh the truck separately if you do it at the same time.

This gives you all your weight info (well not side to side but close enough).

Now you know the real load on your trailer wheels.

Trailers unlike our trucks can be over tired.
My '97 11400 lb gross weight 5er with 5200 lb axles came with ST225/75-15 D at 2580 lbs capacity. Trailer had 9200 (+/- 100 lbs) lbs on the axles depending on how we loaded it.
I upgraded to 16" trailer wheels and BFG Commercial T/A2 LT215/85-16 E at 2680 lbs capacity. Ran the 1st set for 7 years and 55k miles...2nd set for 50k miles and 6 years. No issues.
Going with a LT tire will give you two top choices in a commercial grade all steel ply carcass tire.
    Bridgestone R-250
    Michelin XPS Rib

And several good poly carcass LT tires used on trailers like the ...
    Goodyear Wrangler HT
    Cooper HT-3
    BFG Commercial T/A 2
    Firestone Transforce

All tires above have been recommended by their mfg for trailer use.
  • I moved up from 16" LT tires to 17.5" MT tires. They are a load range J, running 125 PSI, and have over 24,000 pounds of capacity. Have had them over 5 years and have not regretted it once.

How much weight is on your tires?
