Tire Spacing????

I have seen a couple of tire spacing questions, but want to know if any one has ever checked with a manufacturer as to the minimum spacing between 2 tires on a tandem axle trailer. Right now I have 3 1/4" between the tires on our 5er and was thinking of getting a slightly larger tire that would cut the spacing down to about 2". That would get me about another 724 lbs carrying capacity for a pair of tires. :)

  • I saw a new TT that was so close that I had to walk over and see if I could get my fingers between the tires. I could but just barely.
I would think 2" would be no problem but 1" is too little since the wheels will move towards each other as the suspension is articulated.

I upsidsized to 285s on mine when I went to LTs from the stock Chinese junk. There is about 2" between mine and it has not been an issue in the two seasons I have owned it. I keep my eyes on it as I was concerned when I put the tires on.

I assume you typo'd and meant 235's? 285's would not fit well on trailer rims. Chris
  • I have a 05 Challenger and before major suspension repairs I could only put 2 fingers between my tires and now I can get 3 fingers between them and have had no problems with the tires. So Just watch your upper clearance
