Tire step with Gen3 Ram 2500/3500's question

Just picked up a 2007 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 for our future fiver. It has tall bedsides, and I am pretty short. So, will most likely invest in a tire step.

My problem is, the large center cap on the factory alloy wheels, stick out about a half inch past the outermost section of the tire. Most pictures of tire steps I have seen on the net, show the step sitting flush on the tire or edge of rim. In that case, the step plate would not be secure and would rub on the cap. Anyone have a tire step with the factory alloys?

Below is a pic of the style of wheels I have...

Have you looked into full length running boards?
DW insisted on something to help with the big step, I chose a wheel well
To wheel well running boards, makes reaching in the front part of the bed very easy.

I picked up the tire step below from Tractor Supply. The forward face of the step that your hubcap must clear is 4.25" out from the highest point of the sidewall of the tire - I just went out and measured mine. Plus, it's adjustable for more clearance if needed.

That should have plenty of room. Thanks for the link.
  • We carry a small foldable plastic step to pin/un-pin the hitch. Our dually is wide enough without adding a step to the side and it is darned tall. I can barely see into the bed of the truck. It was an inexpensive solution too.
  • Attach some type of spacer to the frame of the step to rest against the tire...a piece of old tire tread, or a block of plastic could probably be made to work...epoxy it in place and that should be good to go.
