We run BFG Commercial T/A on our 3/4 ton TV and currently have 30K miles, all towing our rig as it is a dedicated tow vehicle and just sits in the garage awaiting duty. I heard about the recall (my tire size was unaffected) and some of the issues many have been experiencing, thus far our experience with these tires has been positive.
Our TH is a bit over 10K# loaded with toys and have 15" LR E Maxxis ST tires on it, they have performed well over the last 4 years and 24K miles. We have 8600# on the axles and have 2500# of leeway as the 4 Maxxis LR E ST tires are rated to carry 11.2K# combined. It's a good idea to go to a quality LT tire, especially if you have a heavier rig, but I believe Maxxis produces a better ST tire than most and are a good choice for rigs 10K# and under.
Salespeople always attempt to sell whatever product has the highest profit margin, it's their job to do so no matter the industry. As many others have experienced, getting a set of Maxxis ST tires usually requires the tire store to order them ( any quality tire store can get them) or purchase them online which is the route we took.
As you stated, we did have good luck with our stock china bomb tires and were able to get just over 20K miles on them over the first 3 years before changing out to the aforementioned Maxxis. As I noted above, we have considerable leeway in terms of rated load capacity of the tires used on our rig which contributed to the success we had. Other than crappy manufacturing, the majority of china bomb tires fail from overloading, under-inflation, and excessive speed, or a combination of these factors.
