Too many questions

Hey everyone, my wife and I just recently decided to get into the full time RV lifestyle. We first started out looking at class A motorhomes but have now gained a little more interest in going the 5th wheel route. We have both done so much research lately that I almost feel like I know less than I did when I started.

First, I will mention that we will be living pretty much stationary (other than moving from one local campsite to another in the same area). I am in the military so we won't be traveling full cross country much other than to get out to our next station. However, we do want to have the ability to travel around as well. I say this because I have seen a lot of debate in regards to getting a diesel truck vs gas. I would like to be able to use the truck for commuting purposes once we get stationary, but we do have another car so it isn't mandatory. I've heard for this purpose gas may be the better option, but I also want something powerful enough that I can pull the 5th wheel without stressing over it.

We are looking at 5th wheels anywhere from 35 to 45 feet in length, but trying to stay as close to 35 as possible. It puts us in a hard place in regards to budget, however, as the nicer and heavier the 5th wheel the bigger the truck we need.

Overall, just looking to get some insight in regards to what path to take here for the kind of lifestyle we will have. I have very little experience when it comes to trucks, so when I got into the weeds on weight requirements I felt way in over my head. We will be living full time in this thing for about 4 years so I want to make sure we do this right! Any advice is appreciated.
  • Hey Bumpyroad, A F550 is not really needed !! We pull a 42' Montana 5'er and pull it easily with our F-350, and we don't even have dual rear wheels. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!!
  • to get a 5er big enough for full timing you will need a monster truck to pull it. do you really want to drive /park/etc. a F550 long bed dually in down town new orleans?

  • Another vote for the diesel... The best purchase we have made other than the 5'er. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!
  • I commuted in a diesel several years before I retired. My 30 mile one way commute did include about 20 miles of highway. Not just stop and go city traffic.
  • No reason why you cannot commute in a diesel especially with current fuel prices. If you ever think you'll tow in mountainous areas then you want a diesel. Gassers get horrendous mileage towing but with your plans that may not be a big issue. Expect 5-6 mpg towing tho.
  • We live in a Fuzion 371 towHauler 38ft long and almost 13.5 high. I use the garage for my office when parked and for hauling the bikes when mobile. I would start by what floor models you like and go from there. At least for us we had our basic requirements and then it just kind of fale into place.
