Tow Options with Larger 5th wheel

Thanks for the post otrfun. Very good question we should all have an answer to before leaving home. I will be calling my insurance company tomorrow.

I have Progressive Insurance on the 5er. The insurance pays for a tow if the the truck towing it breaks down. I had a break down a couple months ago and they asked me if I needed a tow rig to handle both or just the TV. I had my Dad tow our 5er home (we were only an hour away) and my truck towed to repair facility. The agent did tell me that my policy would cover a big rig tow to handle both if the need arises.

I come from an era where you could take people at their word, but unfortunately that's not always the case today. I'd be writing your agent a "confirming our conversation of June 20, 2016" letter just to have in my back pocket if this situation should ever arise.

Several HDT owners -Class 7 & 8 trucks, "singled" and still tandem- have had their rigs (and trailers) towed by the various Motor Clubs - inc'l GS and CN.

My current tow insurance is part of my auto insurance policy. Although I've received great service from them in the past, I probably need to give them a call and quiz them on their fine print.

Just called my insurance agent. According to him, in a situation where only the tow vehicle suffered a breakdown (and both the TV and TT have towing coverage), he assured me they would also tow the travel trailer to the nearest safe, secure location as close as possible to the tow vehicle's final tow destination. He didn't have anything in writing that covered this specific scenario, so I'll have to take him at his word.

I have State Farm on all my vehicles and have the towing/roadside assistance on all of them, except the International. They don't offer towing/roadside assistance on their commercial truck policies. It wasn't on my flatbed F350 either, because they considered that one commercial too, since it was originally a cab/chassis truck from the Ford factory, not a pickup.

My other F350 pickup has the towing and roadside assistance, because it's a pickup, as does my Ranger, as did the E350 van when we had it.

We had to have our rig towed in '13 in Montana. We have GS emergency road service and they sent two trucks out. One for TV and one for the 5er. 5er was towed to a local campground and TV to a shop.

When I was towed by GS they sent two trucks. One for the TV and one for the 5er.

When my diesel F350 burned down in a fire on the side of the highway, I was also towing a boat. The towing company came out with an International 4800 heavy duty wrecker truck. They hooked up to the burned truck's front end with their wheel lift and left the boat connected to the truck hitch and towed both home at the same time. I adjusted my hitch higher so the nose of the boat trailer wouldn't hit the ground, since the rear of the truck was lower once they lifted the front with the tow truck.

I was so impressed with that International tow truck that I bought an International 4800 to replace the burned out F350!
