Tow vehicle question

I am purchasing a new Wildwood fifth wheeler and plan on towing with an F-150 Ford. Please advise as to pros and cons, and also how to outfit the tow rig as to powertrain, suspension (factory and aftermarket)products.

I almost do:). My tow rating is 12,500 and I'm at 85-9000 depending on fresh tank fill. My payload is 2176lbs, pin is 17-1800, just the wife and I @275lbs. Factoring in the RAWR I'm golden. Do I have too much truck, heck no but dang it's nice to be under the limits and not worry about whether you can take an extra box of cleanex or have to drive like there's a bowl of gold fish in the front seat. I know you're joking but I just had to reply. Gets old reading the same ole stuff.
  • MY boy has the F150 ecoboost and we are setting it up for a 10K 5er. is this the ecoboost motor??

It's doable but not fun. You'll have to get their 8200 gvw or whatever they offer as the highest payload. For that size fver you'd be better off getting a tt. F'vers where about $5k more and with that setup there would be tt options.

I don't see mention of the size Wildwood they were looking at, but even with the Max, Max F150 I only see about two (smallest) that would be safely towed with the F150.
  • If you are dead set on a half ton get every option as big and bad as possible. You would see a big difference in towing by getting a 3/4 ton.
  • You can never have too much truck.. I would consider moving up to a F250. Safety and reliability.

After spending money on a hopped up engine, beefing up a transmission, extra cooling, new rear end gears, I still wasn't happy with a couple of trucks towing performance. Once I moved up to a 3500 and now a 4500, I am finally more than satisfied towing.
  • We've been very casually looking at doing something similar- here's something we've found useful:

This link gives the weights for the various Wildwood fiver models. Using the GROSS numbers given for the model you're interested in, compare to the capacities of various (2013)F150 models at this F150 specs page.

Information per axle ratios etc is also given at that Ford link.

    Happy shopping!
