Yes, you need a slider, no, you don't need a slider. No one can answer this without knowing about your trailer. Heartland units can turn 88 degrees with a short bed and no slider. Other brands could hit the cab at 50 degrees. I towed with a short bed without a slider for over 10 years but I always had an extended pin box and a rounded front end on the trailer. Yes, I had to be careful when backing but I don't like to turn real short anyway because it is hard on the trailer suspension.
