Towing a full profile fifth?

Looking to take the jump to a 5th wheel. Anyone have any issues towing a full profile 13'-0" rig? I understand there will be a few more backroad overpasses to watch for. My main concern is low wires, tree limbs etc.
  • 13', or in your case 13" is well under a semi. If they are coming the other way, you are safe.

My worry is increased windage. Not from the front. That is the same. It is the height carried all the way to the back & the extra side profile for wind to hit broadside.

A trailer is not much more than a box of air. What is worse, all of the heavy stuff is often on one side. What do you get with a full profile 5er? You get that much more cubic capacity to heat or cool. You get a bunch of cupboards way up high where you cannot reach them without moving a tall step stool around.

Looked at a few of the full profiles a couple years ago. What were the designers thinking?
  • I've only had 1 close call with my 13'5" 5er in 7 years of full timing and that was in CT. I stick to interstates and US highways when going thru large cities/towns figuring if semi's can make it, so can I. Out in the country I just look out for low hanging trees.
  • No problem but be careful for bridges, tree, under pass etc.
  • All paved roads are SUPPOSED to have a minimum of 13'-6" clearance.

I did some contract work for the Bell System and they require 16' for wire crossings. Some cable providers are not so careful.

Real life; maybe not so much but it is very seldom and almost all bridges and railroad overpasses are well marked. Tree limbs can always sneak up on you and once you get off the pavement you are on your own.
