Lantley, Our truck is used in, ice, snow, mud, and often when hunting on very narrow “two tracks”. We sometimes go where we would likely remove the fenders at the duals. Also, DRW’s are notoriously poor performers in the above conditions without a lot of weight in the bed. Simply stated, a SRW is much better suited for these purposes.
Yes, a DRW would likely be a better choice for heavy 5th wheel/gooseneck towing. But, I think that the difference is somewhat blown out of proportion, provided modifications have been made to the SRW.
If I had a dedicated, nice weather, good roads tow vehicle....it would be a Volvo 730, converted /modified for 5th wheel RV use. And I could be in it for substantially less $, than a fully loaded, 350/3500 4x4 DRW pickup! If I were a full timer, that would be our tow vehicle.
