Lantley, Our truck is used in, ice, snow, mud, and often when hunting on very narrow “two tracks”. We sometimes go where we would likely remove the fenders at the duals. Also, DRW’s are notoriously poor performers in the above conditions without a lot of weight in the bed. Simply stated, a SRW is much better suited for these purposes.
Yes, a DRW would likely be a better choice for heavy 5th wheel/gooseneck towing. But, I think that the difference is somewhat blown out of proportion, provided modifications have been made to the SRW.
If I had a dedicated, nice weather, good roads tow vehicle....it would be a Volvo 730, converted /modified for 5th wheel RV use. And I could be in it for substantially less $, than a fully loaded, 350/3500 4x4 DRW pickup! If I were a full timer, that would be our tow vehicle.
I can agree a SRW is more versatile and will always be better in the snow, and for off roading etc. But at some point we must all pick our poison and set our priority.
This is an RV tow vehicle forum, naturally most of the info and interest is focused on RV towing.
As one's individual needs and focus stray away from RV towing, the info given by this forum will not apply and be less useful.
Nevertheless the towing info is still valid. A dually is still the payload king and will do a better job towing a large 5th wheel camper vs. a SRW. However a dually may not be the best vehicle to: go through the drive through, try to park downtown, or take off roading!
Focus on towing heavy and the dually wins focus on other things and there are often better options.
I have a dually because at the end of the day my main focus is on towing my 5th wheel YMMV.
