The manufacturer ratings are for sales they are not law! For example, 2500 ratings are all under 10,000 lbs, yet many of the 2500's have the same engine, transmission, rear end, frame, brakes, etc as their 3500 counter parts. Yes tire ratings matter, and should be counted. But the reason for the 2500 ratings? Some states charge big fees for trucks rated over 10,000 lbs. so to avoid those fees, they rate the 2500 under the 10,000 lbs figures! The owner assumes the liability if there is a mishap, but there is no automatic 350/3500 just because your close.
