I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that it was a purely financial decision. They sell more automagics than manuals (by a large margin), so it costs less to stop making the trucks both ways. Fewer parts to order and stock, fewer options to build at the factory, et cetera. It has nothing to do with which transmission is better in the long run and everything to do with saving a few bucks.
