Okay I realize that towing with a full tank of water adds a lot of weight. My Cougar has a 60 gallon fresh water tank. I have it at home and am planning on camping Memorial Day Weekend at a State Park. They have water but it will be busy so I thought why not fill up at home and then I could ho directly to the campsite.
Can you guys give me rationale why I shouldn't haul water to the park two hours away? Pros and Cons please! Thanks in advance for your opinions...
Speaking for myself, I travel empty (or near-empty) as often as possible. Since most of my travel is usually to mountainous terrain, I don't feel that traveling with several hundred extra lbs is in my best interest. Those that talk about the "stress" on the tanks and hangars and suspension, seem to forget that the rig is designed (or is supposed to be) to include the weight of full tanks in the overall cargo capacity, which would include towing. My strategy for our annual boondocker is to travel to within about 30 miles of our spot before watering down. I'll have a few gallons in the fresh tank for potty stops and a few gallons in the black for "slosh washing", as it were. Now, if you know you're going to be traveling in windy conditions, I'd certainly advocate partially filling all your tanks for stability, and sacrifice the fuel burn.
