I read a lot of postings here where the miles on tires is listed. It's not the miles folks, but other factors that age them that determines when they must be replaced.
Yes, I know. That's what I said. I listed the miles as a reference point; Total miles IS one of the criteria used to determine when a tire is worn out. I expect that some people would only put on 2,000 miles in a year. What other factors are you referring to ? Time ? Mine were exactly one year old. Should they have been replaced at 3 month intervals ? There is something wrong when a DOT approved (I assume) tire (TowMax) can't last more then a year when they are maintained properly.
I'll say this again - I know that 'miles' is not the only criteria to use to determine when to replace an ST tire. I just expected that the TowMax tires would go longer then a year. And that they would not have internal separation problems. That's why I believe they should not be allowed as OEM or replacement tires here. How could they possibly pass the DOT standards ??
MUST I run ST tires ? Could I find LT tires that would work ? Don't know and don't care. I prefer to use tires that are developed specifically for trailers - but I'm picky - I also want GOOD ones.
Here is what Discount Tire says about ST tires:
Why Use An "ST" Tire
•"ST" tires feature materials and construction to meet the higher load requirements and demands of trailering.
•The polyester cords are bigger than they would be for a comparable "P" or "LT" tire.
•The steel cords have a larger diameter and greater tensile strength to meet the additional load requirements.
•"ST" tire rubber compounds contain more chemicals to resist weather and ozone cracking.
As I stated, I've read just about all the tire posts regarding the pros and cons of ST and LT tires. It seems to me that TowMax has single handedly pretty much demolished the reputation of ST tires. But I really can't find any negative posts regarding Maxxis. So it appears that there may be two good solutions to this big ole tire dilemna. I'm walking into this with my eyes wide open. I may resurrect this thread about once a year and post how things are going.
Maxxis gives a 5 year warranty with free replacement during the 1st 12 months or during the first 25% of treadwear and prorated after that.
