Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I agree that the 1500 (especially the Rebel) can't pull much because it's not built for that purpose, but I really wanted the Rebel version for other reasons, and I'm going to have to live with towing a smaller trailer and being very close to (or even a bit beyond) the payload.
I also don't believe that you can't pull a toy hauler with a 1500... you can't pull a BIG toy hauler with a 1500, this is true.
JIMNLIN is right that I was looking at the tire sticker, and not the actual truck payload. I went on http://www.rambodybuilder.com/year.pdf and added all the extra options' weight I got on the truck to the base weight of the truck, subtracted that from the GVWR, and came to a payload of 1364# with remaining rear axle weight of 1523#. Better than 950#, but still not that great, but I'll live with it.
I also agree with Vanished - I think that they lower the payload ratings on the 1500s because they want you to get a 2500 if you plan on doing anything beyond driving the truck (and actually start looking at these numbers). It's a balancing act where they want more people into 2500s yet want to keep up with other 1500s tow ratings, which I think is why they claim 10k lbs towing for the 1500 (BS).
The other day I did a 5 hour drive with 5 people in the cab (about 935 lbs), another 400 lbs of gear in the bed, and a dirt bike and grom on a versahaul dual carrier (another 500 lbs), total of 1800 lbs. Truck handled it fine; plenty of stopping power, plenty of engine power, turned fine, about 15.5 mpg through California hills. Air suspension was okay with all setting but offroad 1 (1" higher than normal), where it complained it would not lift due to payload. I understand towing is another animal, but in regards to payload, I think the truck was okay being 500 lbs over rated payload.
I'll look into the 5000 dry weight range toy haulers, and think I should be okay with it.
Now back to the original question - any non-WW suggestions in the 5000# dry weight range, preferably with a door between bedroom and garage? 2001400ex has some good suggestions (thank you!) that I'm looking into right now.
