TPMS

I need some info about TPMS.What is better the flow thru sensors or the sensors you have to remove to add air to your tires? What brand is better than others? Thanks!

  • I've got the TST with flow through sensors and would not get them again. If you have to add more than a couple PSI they are a PIA. The air flow is very slow and adding 5 PSI to a 235x16 tire will try your patience big time. If I have to add more than a couple PSI I take the sensors off and do it. Saves time in the long run.

If they ever go bad I'll replace them with the regular sensors.
  • That will be a really personal decision.
While the Flow Thru sensors do allow you to add or take out air as you need, you will need to change the user replaceable batteries yearly. We chose the TST 510 sealed batteries because we didn't want to change batteries yearly. The 510 has sensors that are good for 5 to 7 years then would be sent in for replacement at a reduced fee. With the monitor showing the temperature & pressure, we don't remove/check the pressure unless the monitor shows a tire is a lower than we would want it to be. For Dutch, he feels it is not a problem to remove a sensor to add/takeout air but as I said, it is really up to you on which one you get. We have been using the TST brand for 5 years of fulltime use so our sensors never come off. Hugs, Di

  • I have had both the TST 510 and 507 with Flow Through. Both work equally well. I do like the ability to change sensor batteries with the FT. I don't feel the need to remove them after every trip. It was $20 or so per sensor plus shipping to have TST rebuild the 510 sensors.
  • I always air up before a trip and remove them after, so for me flow thru sensors would be of no benefit.
  • Many of us are very happy with TST 507 systems.

The flow thru sensors allow you to add (or remove) air without removing the sensor. But some have mentioned that the air flow when adding air thru those sensors is very slow. And they are heavier than the standard sensors.

I have the standard sensors (not flow thru). Not a problem for me. I remove mine in Oct/Nov. In late March or early April I check the tire air pressures. Invariably I add no more than 2-3 pounds of air to each tire and put the sensors back on. And I do not have to add any more air thru the travel season. And have never had a tire go low during a travel season. Only takes a few seconds to take one off, or put it back on if needed.

TST 507 has user replaceable batteries.
