Do these things really work? Or are they like radar detectors, just lets you know your getting a ticket.

It's nice that you don't, but others such as myself do. It varies from application to application. I have my receiver mounted low on the console of the truck, so the signal is probably being blocked somewhat by the truck's tailgate, the rear metal wall of the cab, etc. If the receiver were on the top of the dash, it might work OK. I do know that when I've not plugged in the repeater, I've gotten lost signal alarms on 2 of the 4 trailer tires within 30 minutes.
