Trailer Aid?

Has anyone used one of these with your rig loaded? Looking in to other ideas for changing tires, inspecting brakes, etc. Currently have a 5 ton bottle jack on board but after reading where Dexter doesn't recommend jacking on the axle tube or springs, rethinking a bit.
  • 35' trailer, 24" from ground to bottom of frame, what kind of jack is going to get one tire off the ground?
  • Why not lift the trailer at the frame? That is the smartest place to put it.
  • Trailer aid works good on tandem axle units, on my tripple not so much. althouh it still helps. And I also jack all of my trailer up under the spring mount.

    Jim, thanks for the additional on jacking. I did just that with an 8 ton bottle, right between the u-bolts and seemed to do just fine.
  • X2 Trailer Aid and adding an extra board. Only had to use it once in 9 seasons, however.
  • Dexters warning is for those new folks that don't know any better and place the jack under the axle tube towards the center of the axle and bends it.
    Place the jack under the axle tube next to the U bolt or the U bolt itself and you won't bend the tube and no it won't crush the tube either, on a std leaf spring axle.

    I have a 12 ton shortie hyd bottle I have used for years on my equipment trailers axles from 1750 lbs up to 10k lbs.

    Now if you have Dexters torsion axles then its a different story with those thin wall axle tubes.
  • Yes I have used the Trailer Aide ramp sucessfully a couple of times on the side of the road. Works great. On our Mobile Suites I did have to put an additional board under it to get the height but it worked flawlessly. Just don't forget to looses the wheel nuts on the bad tire before driving up on it with the good tire.
  • The problem with the trailer aid is it puts all of the weight on one tire, wheel and axle, thereby overloading them. By how much, of course, depends on your trailer, but in most cases I bet the overload is significant and enough to cause permanent damage to some components.
