Trailer Generator

I have thought of buying a trailer or 5th wheel to pull behind my 1/2 ton pick-up. My biggest reasons for not buying one is what is the largest rig I can pull behind my truck and where do you get electricity when you travel. Where can you put a generator? Thanks

  • - With a 1/2ton truck, you will be very limited on the 5th wheels you can tow. Most units advertised as 1/2ton units can't really be towed by 1/2ton trucks if you want to stay in the ratings of the truck. The big issue is typically the pin wieght which quickly exceed the rating of the truck.
    - We keep the generator in the truck bed but most times we are at a campground with shore power available.
  • I carried mine in the front trunk located under the hitch. Of course I had to lift it out to use it. Also, had to lock it up when using it. The generator was a 2800 watt Yamaha that weighed about 63 pounds. This got old real quick on the trip to Alaska and back.

After only about 2 years, we traded for a class C. Not just for the built-in generator, but other reasons as well.

  • You need to find out what your TV "payload" & GCWR is before doing anything.

The payload is going to be the most important, as it's not what you can pull, but what you can carry.
  • I used to carry a generator in the bed of my truck. Eventually I got tired of that plan and had a welding shop make a mount for a generator for the back bumper of the trailer. Worked great. I got an inexpensive Harbor Freight generator and bolted it down to the mount hanging on the reinforced mount tied to the frame above the rear bumper. Had I kept the TT I would have redone the wiring so all I would need to do is start the generator and power would come on inside the TT.
  • Ummmm...wouldn't this be better placed in the FIFTH WHEEL FORUM....:h:h...Dennis
