It does shorten the trip, but there is the 4 hills in the way, Snoqualmie pass, and Manastash ridge, and the two lower ridges south of it, north of Yakima.
If you stay on 84 to I205, you may have icy roads in The Gorge. You will need to watch road reports and the weather reports closely in this area, and make your choice based on the best condition.
