When traveling longer distances, we shoot for 6 hours of actual driving time (how ever far that happens to be, depending upon the terrain. That gives plenty of time for sight seeing along the way too, and gets us at a resting place so we're not ragged-out.
Observation: The older you get, the less important it is to "get there". What's important is to enjoy everything along the way getting there.
