Before I was 50 I usually drove the vehicle alone or the class B or the truck camper rig all the way from West Michigan to our place in the West Palm Beach Florida area in one constant driving trip. Many time pulling a boat behind too. Just stop for fuel or get fast food to eat or toilet use. Wasn't hard for me to do as staying awake and alert for the 20 to 24 hours was not a problem as the goal was to get there fast because owning a demanding business trains you well. Beside time being away with the family or later the wonderful wife was limited and very precious and was so great. Besides, I can sleep when we got there! Yes, I'm a night owl anyway and seldom need or sleep over 6 hours at night and it's very normal for me! People differ greatly...
After semi-retiring at 58 and fully just before 60 and selling the business, there was no longer a need to pound the pavement and we never do or have for the last 17+ years. Sometimes only 200-250 miles in a day, and only once over 400 miles in a day so far.
Both scenarios worked very fine for me and us and allowed us to do so much for so many years and WE have the memories forever but those who sleep half their live away still are faced with each day only having 24 total hours. We chose to get at least 16 to 18 hours of each day doing things but it's not for everyone for various reasons. So glad we did what we had! If the shoe fits -----.
Why not just fly down? We both flew during the weeks home and grew to despise flying and reserved it for things like going on cruises (16) or other quick trips and I sure wasn't going to use the business planes as they were strictly for business uses. What a waste in our eyes having to drive to an airport and be there about 2 hours early, pay to park the vehicle, pay the cost to fly and hope it's not delayed or cancelled so you can't make your connections, arrive at the zoo to retrieve luggage, rent a vehicle or get on public transportation or pay thru the nose for an unpleasant cab ride, and arrive at your destination more wiped out than if you'd driven. You'll have your very own vehicle with you and a whole lot for money still in your wallet! A bonus is that you decided what and if and where and when you'd eat or stop and walk around which is not very wise on an airplane wing. All that stuff is right with you when in or pulling an RV of nearly any reasonable size and the real kicker is that you make your own decisions and schedules or no schedule at all! Both ways get you to the very same desire location and usually only in a few hours difference if you desire!
