I think this question very often is answered by demographic. If you're retired you follow the "rule of 3." If you have kids in school and activities plus a job with limited vacation days you will push harder on miles to accomplish what you want within the framework you have available. I don't necessarily enjoy it but I'll hammer out a 1000 mile day when needed.
