What is your tow vehicle? You are adding 100+ miles to your trip by going up to Wytheville. US23/58 outs you at the start of I-26. I-26 has some pulls, but unless you are terribly overloaded or under powered, you shouldn't have an issue. No matter the route you have to cross the mountain.
If you are set on not going I-26, I would consider going to I-40 and going through the gorge. Depending where you are coming from in KY, might be shorter than I-77.
