I do know if you travel on Washington state ferry's (BC ferry's also) you need to shut off the propane, that is about the only regulation I know of in the west.

We are snowbird ing in reverse, went from Central FLA, to PA. Made it in before the snow! I was under the false impression, that I needed 110v to run the furnace, (I have had experience with AC and reverse cycle AC for heat). Well, I left the thermostat set on furnace, and 50 degrees, when we left. When we got to our first stop in the 30's, but it was nice and warm inside! We have left it set that way for the entire trip, and it is nice to come into a nice warm RV after setting up in the evening! As stated make sure registers and such are not covered, and you will be OK!

The only STATE listed here for no open propane cyl when traveling on open highways is NJ, there are a few more provinces with the rule.

Kind of an old list but it's all I could find. I did see mention elsewhere that CA is another. Many states have the tunnel prohibition.

Only issue with furnace on while traveling is IF floor registers are blocked and/or furnace return air flow is blocked/obstructed.

Furnace needs adequate airflow thru heat exchanger to remove heat generated by propane flame otherwise temp can rise to fast or heat exchanger can get too hot...in either case the 'High Temp Limit Switch' will shut down furnace flame causing furnace to short cycle.

Otherwise run it........


Only restrictions on propane is some tunnels, ferries ----------and they will be CLEARLY MARKED
Otherwise states do NOT prohibit having propane valve open and in use.

If the states prohibited open propane valves, then there wouldn't be any refer trucks on the road and no frozen foods in the grocery store you shop at. My understanding is that there are a few bridges and tunnels that have propane restrictions, but that is a minimal impact on commerce or RVers.

We usually head south for a few weeks in Febr. We have found that if we turn the furnace on to 55 degrees about 100 miles before our first stop that it helps take the chill off. One days drive from Co. Springs usually puts us far enough south to dewinterize when we reach our first campground.

Personally, I have never run with the furnace on. I expect the low pressure area on the side of the camper rig, could cause excessive draw, either blowing out the flame, or potentially damaging the side of the trailer from excessive heat. Worse yet, creating a propane leak which would cause a catastrophic explosion!

When we set up for an overnight stop in cold weather, I leave the slides closed and start the furnace. Helps even more if your camper has an electric fireplace! We then go out for supper. By the time we get back, the camper is toasty warm. Oh yeah, don't forget to turn the covers down on the bed , so they warm up as well! Also, don't de-winterize until you are at least in the Carolina's.
