Trouble hooking up

Got a Reflection 323 BHS today along with a B&W Companion hitch. The problem I have is twofold. The hitch seems to sit a little lower than most hitches I have had and I have a toolbox. Not a big one, but one of the smallest ones I could find. On my first hookup I couldn't see the hitch at all in my rear view , and if my wife hadn't been there to spot for me I would probably have had to get out a dozen times to see where I was at. Has anyone else had this issue, and how did you overcome it?

  • Use your mirrors to back into the 5th wheel. I can't see my hitch from the driver's seat either. Back up to your 5er looking in the mirrors. Make sure that you have the same amount of room on each side of the truck sides compared to the sides of the 5er. Back up until your pin box is just entering into the back of the truck, then stop get out and have a look see. It's not that hard.

Zero issues with the fiver, but daughters GN horse trailer $4.99 extendable magnetic pickup stick works great!
  • My dad put a piece of stick-on vinyl in the center of his rear glass so he could line up with the gooseneck on our big trailer. I've heard the magnet and rod works well, too.

  • I don't have that problem, but if I did, I would use a rear view wireless camera (I still have one from when I owned a TT) and I'd put it where I would be able to see the hitch point. I got mine on Amazon for around $100. I think it's Chinese made, but worked fine for me.
  • With the lower hitch, do you have enough clearance on the bed rails? You might raise the pin box and hitch both, get to mirror visibility and good clearance (still need to have a degree of level while hooked). Failing all the reconfigure, easy fix is colored tape on top of toolbox and on pin box line up the two pieces of tape and connect.
  • put a magnic with a rod on the front of the hitch in the center you will get hitched every time
  • Yeah, new to FW from TT. It took some practice. Once you get a good idea you can guesstimate a bit better. I only have to get out and look 11 times now.
  • Yes, it does take practice. I have a tastefully apointed bumper sticker covering a few boo boo's. My wife gives me specifics like four inch's back and two to the drivers side. Your rig should sit level when hooked. Congrats
  • takes practice! I use a goose ball and can't see at all. I have to use reference points and lots of practice to get it right. You could get a set of those magnetic balls on sticks to help you out.
