I agree this is terrible advice. Furthermore if you put it in 4x4 over 55mph you're going to have some damage also. That's in the Ford manual. Dry roads will definitely do damage.

Driving on ICE you're at the will of outside forces, driving in SNOW is a learned skill. Black ice you really have no control. Putting it in 4x4 is not going to help unless you get dry pavement.
