If he was on ice and not traveling in an exact straight line (even a slight curve), I could still understand why auto disengagement of the cruise control could have caused his problem. Power to the rear wheels would suddenly be cut off. You would have a heavy fifth wheel suddenly pushing the tow vehicle at 65 mph - even just for a moment. On ice. Tail wagging the dog. Seems like a loss of control could result.
