If he was on ice and not traveling in an exact straight line (even a slight curve), I could still understand why auto disengagement of the cruise control could have caused his problem. Power to the rear wheels would suddenly be cut off. You would have a heavy fifth wheel suddenly pushing the tow vehicle at 65 mph - even just for a moment. On ice. Tail wagging the dog. Seems like a loss of control could result.

My best friend besides 4X4, is my clutch pedal!! Braking or applying power will just make it worse, you want all wheels turning freely for the best chance of regaining control. If an automatic Trans, put it in neutral!! I have recovered from slides using this method.

4X4, has the advantage until you need to stop! Yes, it does give you better starting traction, but also provides greater directional control while driving on slippery surfaces. It is how one chooses to use that greater control!
The reason "Black Ice" is so dangerous is it is usually formed right at freezing 32 degrees F, and 0 degrees C., it is usually ice with a thin layer of water on it, and is the slipperiest surface a driver will ever face! Not a road you want to be on anytime for sure not pulling a trailer.
