Let's not beat the poor guy up.  Black ice is called black ice for a reason, because it's hidden and you don't know it until it's too late.  He had an accident and, thank good, walked away.  It's not fair to Monday morning quarterback what he did.  I'm hearing that there wasn't much concern with what he saw on the road and was driving accordingly.  Sometimes you can do everything right and still have something bad happen.  I've had it happen to me on a few occasions, and it was literally a patch in the middle of dry road.
4x4 - It's fine to use it. I use mine doing 60 - 65 fairly routinely if I have an inkling that it could be slippery. The manual will tell you shift on the fly under highway speeds. As I said before, I'd it is staying to bind, you will feel it. But for normal highway stuff, you'll be fine.
