6-8" is norm
If box sticks up that high you will make contact when maneuvering.....
Backing in to a site or hard turns right/left going forward unless you have a slider hitch.

Worse than having a Short Bed!! You are best to keep it below the bed rails, the over the rails just chew up the rails. If you want a cap when not towing the 5er you can put one on or a bed cover.
