Two Bath Conversion

Rich here.A newbe for sure.I have a question on converting a half bath into a full bath in a fifth wheel trailer? Is this feasible?Very few of the larger 39-41 foot floorplans seem to have the little extra space to install a shower.Should I be thinking a toy hauler instead, and doing my own conversion? Is two full baths out of the question?Open to feed back or recommendations.
Thanks Rich
  • It sounds to me like you need a custom built FW.

My better half and I are retired and strongly considering going full time RV. I currently have a 2014 Fusion Impact toyhauler, 39 ft with a 12 ft garage. It has a queen bed that lets down from the ceiling and we have used it for guests. It also has a 1/2 bath off of the garage.

Everything in an RV is a compromise. The 1/2 bath takes room from the kitchen. Since you can't really shrink the kitchen, we have lost room from the living area - which the kitchen is a part of. We can really only seat three people in our living area and the dinning area is in the garage (fold down sears). This is OK for the two of us. But if we have company, someone (me) must sit on the stairs to the bedroom. We lived in the toyhauler for six months this spring and summer. We did well - and are still married! :). But having guests was a chore.

If we full time, I think I will buy an FW with a rear living area and a bath and a half. If we do that, my wife will have to tow a trailer with our motorcycles. That will mean having to operate two vehicles every time we move. But we would gain the living space of an apartment that way and still have our toys.
  • Rich her again.I'm not to worried about the ability to build or convert a half bath into one with a shower. The hardest part might be getting a pre formed shower into a fiver as opposed to a toy hauler possibly.I know in a regular house that can be an issue for a 4 ft x 3 ft preformed shower without knocking out a window or outside wall.Im wanting to have a full rv bath for my sister as well as for the wife and myself.
I would also like for her to have her own bedroom, with a queen size bed folding down out of slide out. Most of the secondary sleeping areas seemed more geared for bunk beds for younger people. In retirement, this would be more comfortable day in an day out scenario. But is it realistic? Thanks Rich
  • Most toyhaulers only have a bath and a half. Room to enlarge the half bath is the same situation as a regular fiver. Most toyhaulers do have an outside shower with hot and cold water.
  • It can be done depending on how much construction & plumbing experience you have. I once created a shower/toilet space out of a closet in a chassis mounted camper. Waterproofing and plumbing to water source and holding tanks were the biggest problems.

You might be able to get away with changing the 1/2 bath into a wet room shower/toilet setup.

I had thought of one of these for use in a ToyHauler garage area.

  • Depending on the type of construction of the walls and floor the answer to your question could range from "very difficult" to "impossible". I think if not having two full baths is a deal breaker, then you need to find a unit that has two full baths. Creating a full bath out of a half bath is going to be similar to trying to create Mt. Rushmore out of a mountain side in my opinion; doable, but too monumental of a task for the average person.
