I also don't think it matters too much what you use. But I want something that will cling as tight as possible, and nothing clings better than motorcycle chain and cable spray. Stays where I put it. And it is designed to penetrate the rollers in chain, so it wicks into tight places nicely.
But I haven't put it on the pin itself in a long time. Your hitch jaws need lube, so I use the chain and cable spray for that and hit the face where the jaws touch the pin while at it. Which transfers to the pin next time I hitch up.
