Unhook for quick overnight stop

We are finally getting ready for our maiden voyage.
Let's say we stop for a few hours to sleep at a rest stop, is there any point in unhooking the FW?

Please be prepared for many more goofy questions between now and mid December.

  • I was told that the Ford when the key is off no power drawn from the truck. Depending on how unstable the FW is probably put up with the wiggle for the night.

If you =do= decide you need/have to unhook and leave for food, laundry, etc., I'd highly suggest installing a good pin lock, just to make it harder for someone to hook up and drive off with your FW.

Yup, unhook the cord just in case. I almost always unhitch and pull the truck forward a foot or so so I can level. It takes no more than a couple of minutes to hitch back up.

I've never had to do a stop like this, but I'd have to unhook and pull forward a bit to level, as I do tow a touch nose-high. No big deal... FWIW, with only 2 of us, I'd likely not even unhook the cord, as we simply don't use enough juice to drain the truck's batteries. I =do= have 2 6v batteries, though.

Same here - We leave the truck connected and drop some stablizing jacks... I do sometimes pull the trailer connector to keep from drawing down my truck start battery.

Alot of places are not marked as legal to park there and sometimes you are asked by law enforcement to leave so it is kinda neat to just get in the truck and drive away.

When we use a WALMART or some other all night like place we always go inside and let management know we are parking over-night in their parking lot...

  • I don't put any jacks down. Just go in get some sleep and the get up and take off. Plus always thought that way if there was a reason to rush off I could jump in the truck and be gone quickly.
  • Thanks guys
The dealer said the same thing about unhooking the cord, it can't hurt.
  • Nope! We stay hitched up. I might lower my landing gear or stabilizers to take some shake out (with a family of 4- there's a lot of moving around that happens).

One thing that I consistently do is unplug the camper's umbillical cord from the truck. I don't know if it is possible or not, but I read that you can drain the truck's batteries overnight with it plugged in. So, better safe than sorry. (Though, I do have 2 truck batteries and only 1 camper battery.)
  • No need for an overnight stop when you don't need to use your truck for anything else. I do put down my front jacks just enough to stabilize.
