While neither the email to me nor the press release specifically state that the redesign was only done for the aluminum version, I believe its safe to speculate that this is the case. But I wouldn't likewise speculate that only a percentage of owners have the aluminum version. Less than the steel owners...I can agree with that.
To continue with speculation, I would further wonder if they're not trying to phase out the steel version. They may not be interested in redesigning the steel one if that's the case. I don't personally see an advantage in the steel over the aluminum in the current scenario, other than a few dollars. And since the industry is clearly moving away from the rail-mount systems, they may be phasing that out too. Again, just my speculation.
