Robert,
First you used the TFL results of the Ike Gauntlet to say the performance of US trucks towing 30k lbs was unacceptable based on the following statements.
“On the TFL website they were towing 30,000lb trailers up a 7 % Gradient and they were crawling. Minium speed was very slow indeed. Too suggest this is an acceptable speed maybe it is in the US but not here.”
“Rated to tow 30,000lb , yes if you want snails passing you.”
“Duallies towing 30,00lbs are banned here”
Then you implied those results would fail the ADR standard that was more stringent.
“It is not a subjective test. It is an ADR standard. Those speeds would not be cut the mustard”
“That is why the US standard is rejected outright here and anywhere else outside the US.”
But after several requests, you have not provided an actual link to your claims. But you say the ADR is not test based but static equations.
“Australian Design Rule standard is not a prediction of performance as the US “standard “.
Their is no performance test. Europeans and Japanese have similar standards, they are static equations. No subjective testing anywhere. You still have a subjective slant on this, , you keep talking about road conditions it is not a pass or fail, or anything to do with road conditions. Road conditions, temp of the road , seasons of the year become subjective aspects. Not acceptable in a standard”
So, here is what the ADR says (red highlights added):
The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are national standards for vehicle safety, anti-theft and emissions. The ADRs are generallyperformance based and cover issues such as occupant protection, structures, lighting, noise, engine exhaust emissions, brakingand a range of miscellaneous items.
There is nothing about towing speed, minimum or maximum in the ADR. The only speed reference in the entire ADR is ADR 65 which covers speed limiters for heavy commercial vehicles.
ADR 65—Maximum Road Speed Limiting for Heavy Goods Vehicles and Heavy Omnibuses
Finally, vehicle certification depends on physical testing as stated below. But again, no reference in minimum towing performance.
The certification system for new vehicles is a type approval, wherein a vehicle design representing a make-model (the “type” of vehicle) undergoes tests to demonstrate compliance with the safety and emissions standard. If the vehicle complies then all others of the same design, or type, will also comply.
The Department does not test vehicles for certification purposes. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring compliance with the ADRs. The Australian certification process allows the vehicle manufacturer (“the licensee”) to conduct the various ADR tests. The tests may be conducted in a place convenient to the manufacturer provided they are performed correctly.
