Gas is perfectly safe the same as electricity if treated with respect. I leave the gas on all the time in our 5er. We use it year round, we attempt once a month, I lived in a mostly gas house for 15 years, never an issue. I think if you depressurize the system then pressurize many times is more of an issue than leaving it on.
