I think running the fridge on AC most of the time would minimize the possibility of fire. IMO, an open flame would be much more likely to ignite leaking gases contained in the cooling unit than a hot cartridge heater would.
I think the best fix is to install a residential (compressor-type) fridge. I think that's what I'd do if my present Dometic fails. Of course, this wouldn't apply to those who boondock a lot unless they have ample energy available.
