I am going to replace tires soon and go from d to e rated tire. I will be using a tpms and need to go to a metal valve stem. How can I tell what diameter valve stem to order without removing the exist...

Installers always install new valve stems with new tires, so just specify you want metal stems rather than rubber. Let the installer determine the right diameter shank, length and mounting style (some have the nut on the inside for use on wheels with recessed holes). Places like Discount Tire will install metal stems w/o extra $$.
