very high fifth wheel and bridge concerns

Well it won't be long till we finally take our maiden voyage with our new Big Country. This fiver is much higher than our old Citation. Hubby measured including air conditioners it is 13 '6. Im very concerned that we will get ourselves in a jam if we don't seriously map out our trips. Do any of you use a truckers GPS that you can input your route and it lets you know which roads to avoid due to low bridges.

I must say this is freaking me out a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct about interstates but it's getting off them that's the problem. Here in the east, we have some very low bridges that are down around 10' in height.
  • I'm partial to the "Old Stubby Pencil" route, go the any truck stop, and buy a Motor Carriers Road Atlas. This will list low clearances, restricted routes, and, any route show highlighted on the individual state maps are authorized routes for large trucks/semi's.

  • DH uses the Delorme Street Atlas and downloads the "low overheads" POI file. It is not complete, however. We also carry a "Motor Carriers Atlas" which gives you all the low overheads on any truck route in the U.S. Very handy to have.

  • The garmin dezl has that option. I'd consider the dezl 770 if buying now. Also the low clearance poi database. And the co pilot app for smart phones has an RV height profile for routing.
