Actually it is "Just Resting" on the bed.......The post pulls it down to the bed and all of the vertical weight is placed on the bed. If the underbed mounted gooseneck mount it supporting the weight without he bed in between, one has not torqued the draw bolt down.
The bed floor and supports under the floor are THE heart of the hitch mounting. They are sandwiched between the Companion base and the gooseneck framework under the bed. When the bed is cracked or crushed, this secure connection is lost.
FJ12, I understand that you and most other are without a problem. Add 4K to your trailer, 1-2K more pin weight, and a truck that nearly weighs what the trailer does empty and things will happen.
Shock loads that the trailer would normally transmit to 7K truck in a violent fashion I simply don't feel because my truck weighs twice that loaded.....so the hitch absorbs them instead. Before the Morryde, this absorption was done by the Companion flexing the bed.
A simple ride in the bed of the truck while driving on a dirt roads with some pot holes will convince you...... Mine was downright scary!
