The bed floor and supports under the floor are THE heart of the hitch mounting. They are sandwiched between the Companion base and the gooseneck framework under the bed. When the bed is cracked or crushed, this secure connection is lost.
The "just resting" part is what MY companion is doing as the weight of my hitch is sitting on the bed and the bottom of the post as my lock pin is free with the draw down bolt "torqued" to 40 ft lbs. Your companion is pulled into the bed then repeatedly hammered into it during towing. Have you considered the new Reese goose pinbox, I'm seriously looking at it for use with my new 2014 truck just using the B&W turnover part.
