The BEST way to determine if you have overheated brakes is by taking the actual temperature of the brakes. Don't necessarily NEED the actual temperature but you can place your hand on the wheel and tell from that if your brakes are NOT overheated and make some pretty accurate assessments of when they are. You don't have to USE the brakes to have them overheated (they may just be dragging all the time due to bad adjustment or sticking when applied so they don't fully release.
I've never used the prodegy so I'm not sure just what (or how) it would give a hot brake warning but you can likely find some reference to it in your user manual.
