Weight requiring duals?

I have towed fivers with a SRW 3/4 ton and I have towed the same 36ft. Fiver with a DRW. End of story. Now I tow a heavy fiver see my sig. As said pulling or towing can be done with a SRW but at 17,000 your pin is heavy and you still have to add all the extras. If you are talking dry weight the fiver in my sig came in at 3425lbs on the pin and 17235 dry. Add in all the extras plus hitch, fuel, passengers etc. and guess what.

There is no set trailer weight number for a dually requirement. You must look at the payload rating for each truck. Even 350/3500 trucks of the same model year can vary greatly in payload rating depending on the specifics of that truck such as engine, transmission, gear ratio, cab type, bed type, etc. Newer trucks have much higher ratings than their predecessors of a few years ago, but you must look at the specific ratings to be sure it will meet your requirements.

I think dualls are very advantageous long before they are "required".

It's all about actual pin weight and payload of the truck. Brochures paint a pretty picture. Mine was listed at pin weight of 2,680 lbs. When in rolled in the door, it was 3,400 lbs on the pin, and with water and our equipment it his 4,340 lbs on the pin. The payload on our F350 SRW was 3,750, so even without water we were bouncing off the maximum which is not a good feeling, especially on tires that are maxed out.

The F350 dually has a payload over 5,500 lbs, tire capacity of nearly 12,000 lbs, and a 9,000 lb axle so it handles our 4,340 pin weight and 17220 gross weight of the trailer nicely. Didn't want a dually, but it does what it is supposed to do.

When shopping around I used 15500 as the max for my F350 SRW and all the numbers will work except for GCVWR which with my truck at 8200 limits that.

Read the truck specs from the manufacturer and see what the difference is. Stability is the same as long as both have 1 ton suspension system, I have had both.

I had a 9600gvw 5er when I went to a dually and it was night and day even tho the srw was well within the limits. Craig.
